THE COLORS OF AUTUMN
If you like flowers and color, you will love our fall mums. Fall mums fill the color void in the garden while the days are still warm, but a lot of our summer annuals are winding down. They’re great for borders, mass plantings, containers — anywhere you want color.
The changing track of sunlight in your garden allows you to create a seemingly whole new garden in autumn. Mix mums with some of our other fall items such as ornamental kale and cabbage. Keep the fundamentals of color and design in mind when planting your fall garden.
FIELD GROWN MUMS
Chrysanthemums are a must-have for the fall garden. No other fall flower delivers as much color for as long and as reliably as good ol’ mums. Mums liven up the fading fall garden with handsome flowers of nearly all shades and colors. Some varieties have daisy blooms; others may be rounded globes, flat, or spoon shape.
Varieties: Camina, Compo Orange, Contika Red, Ibera White, Izola Orange, Padre White, Sapiro Yellow, Savona
Container size: 9″ pot
CABBAGE
Ornamental cabbage is one of the easiest bedding plants to grow, looks great all through the cool season, is bothered by few pests – and it’s edible! The large plants cover a lot of space quickly for a small investment, and require very little maintenance.
Varieties: Dynasty Red, Pigeon Red, Pigeon White
Container size: 9″ and 4 1/2″ pot
KALE
Thank goodness for kale. It’s one of the few plants available to add a fresh burst of color and life to the fall landscape! Its leaves come with beautiful variegations in pinks, purples, and reds that blend beautifully with changing autumn foliage. Plant it in spring or in the fall after you tear out tired or frost-damaged annuals.
Varieties: Chidori Red, Emperor (Red, White), Kanome White, Peacock (Red, White)
Container size: 9″ pot
CYCLAMEN
Cyclamen plants start showing up for sale around holiday time. With flowers in shades of pink, red, or white, you can find them blooming on shelves in garden centers and even grocery stores. Even the foliage is attractive, often having silver marbling on the top sides of the leaves. The entire plant, when in flower, reaches only about 8 inches high. Cyclamen make excellent houseplants, blooming for weeks and requiring very little care.
Varieties: Mixed colors
Container size: 4 1/2″ pot
PANSY
Pansies are available in many rich colors that compliment the bold hues of changing autumn leaves. This makes them a garden designer’s dream! Plant them in hollowed out pumpkins or accent them with straw bales for autumn decoration. Or, select greenery and black and purple accents for a spooky holiday garden delight.
Varieties: Mixed colors
Container size: 4 1/2″” pot
ORNAMENTAL GRASS
Ornamental Grasses are a large family of beautiful perennial plants that add texture, color and movement to the garden. Ornamental grasses, like conifers and other evergreens, also provide interest in the fall and winter landscape, especially when backlit by morning or afternoon sun. When the flowers of summer are only a memory, you’ll find delight looking out on frosted ornamental grass spikes in the early light of a cold winter’s day.
Varieties: Mixed colors
Container size: 9″ pot
ORNAMENTAL PEPPERS
Heat up your garden with ornamental peppers! Much like hot peppers you would grow in the veggie garden, ornamental peppers produce colorful little fruits that are round or pointed. But these are so attractive in their own right that they can be grown just for show — not eating.
Varieties: Calico
Container size: 4 1/2″” pot
CUT FLOWERS – KALE
The refined Cranes are well known in cut flower circles for their use as a novelty cut. Used extensively in seasonal flower arrangements, they add color and texture to mixed arrangements. The hybrid genetics make the series more uniform in habit, flower size and color, with plants that can be spaced close together for high density production.
Colors: Pink, White, Red
Container size: 4 1/2″” pot
